Although it is January first of 2009, I believe I have already found the quote of the year, courtesy of Tzipi Livni (above), Israel's foreign minister: "there is no humanitarian crisis in the [Gaza] Strip, and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce." Let's start with the humanitarian crisis part...WHAT GAZA STRIP IS THIS WOMAN TALKING ABOUT!!! She must be talking about Little Gaza in Anaheim, where the only crisis is Disneyland's refusal to acknowledge lil Gaza as part of the park. Oh I see, we should ask for a definition of humanitarian crisis shouldn't we? Wikipedia states that:
A humanitarian crisis (or "humanitarian disaster") is an event or series of events which represents a critical threat to the health, safety, security or wellbeing of a community or other large group of people, usually over a wide area. Armed conflicts, epidemics, famine, natural disasters and other major emergencies may all involve or lead to a humanitarian crisis.
I believe that Gaza is experiencing all of the above listed symptoms of a humanitarian crisis except for natural disasters...unless of course you consider the birth of people like Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni natural disasters in and of themselves (hell, I do). The condition of the Gaza Strip is deplorable, though very few people are aware of it due to filtered media coverage and biased reporting in favor of US Foreign Policy (the US and Israel are bossom buddies).
The statistics for Gaza's humanitarian crisis are available at http://www.alternativenews.org/news/english/the-gaza-strip-a-humanitarian-implosion-20080309.html
Next point: since we have established that there is a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza strip, then livni's second statement that "there is no need for a humanitarian truce," is inherently incorrect... that is if you're a rational person and not a Zionist. But of course, if you're a Zionist, you think that Israel needs to teach the Palestinians a lesson and respond to Hammas's attacks through collective punishment.
All I can say is that collective punishment NEVER WORKS you idiots. Israel's invasion of Lebanon in the summer of 2006 and murder of hundreds of innocent civilians and destruction of millions of dollars worth of property only made the Lebanese people and international community ANGRIER!!! But the Israelis can't be bothered with that trivial concept called rationality, let alone humanity.
The mainstream media seems to forget that Israel is and has been an Occupying Entity bent on taking all Palestinian land and destroying the Palestinian people since 1948. These past six days of aerial assault are not another instance of Israel defending itself but rather the continuation of the invasion and conquest of Palestine that started some 60+ years ago. With today's waning attention span it is no wonder that the average American believes that this conflict is a recent one. They can't seem to remember who invaded who, let alone that falafel is an Arab dish and not an Israeli one.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire...
